It seems like I have to constantly monitor those activities to prevent them from "redecorating" the couch. I caved in today and let Ollie paint with water colors. Then the phone rang and I stepped out of the room for about 20 seconds. When I returned, Ollie had devoured a chunk of the blue paint. Why would anyone eat paint? Who knows the mind of a 2 year old?! He had very interesting diapers for the next few days. Suffice to say, the art projects will stay locked up for a while for Ollie.

7/28/09 - ESCAPE TO LONG BEACH

PREVIOUS
NEXT
RETURN TO ORION'S BLOG
A heat wave has hit Western Washington and Grandma decided she was renting a place on the WA coast to avoid the heat inland. She invited us to come so the boys and I packed up and left poor John and Baxter back in the heat. I think it maxed out at about 108 degrees in Olympia.

But in Long Beach, the weather was perfect. It was even a bit chilly out at the beach once the wind kicked in.

We had our own condo and Grandma and Grandpa had one down the hall. Orion slept at Grandma's condo and thought that was a treat.

Both boys really enjoyed swimming in the pool too. Orion liked that it was shallow enough for him to stand up in. When we returned home, the heat had subsided. It was a very nice escape. Orion hadn't been there since he was a toddler and Oliver had never been there. It was fun to see all the kids interact.

Behind the house, Uncle Ken had a kid's playhouse built. Orion absolutely loved playing in it with Jolene (and Sydney and Kayla). The little kids had fun riding toys around the pickle ball court. And Ollie, being the ball boy that he is, loved hitting the pickle ball around.

But once Ollie discovered some water toys on the beach it was all over. He wanted to fill up cups of water and dump them on people's toes. Uncle Seong Yoon tolerated this very well so he became Ollie's main victim.

And speaking of victims, I guess little Logan (cousin Kristin's son) has a bit of a strong personality and at one point started beating up Orion when he wanted to ride on the toy Orion was on. Orion somehow knew that Logan was much younger and that he shouldn't hit back. So he just took the beating. Kind of amusing. Not to fear, adults eventually intervened.

7/17/09 - OLLIE'S FIRST SNOW CONE

PREVIOUS
NEXT
RETURN TO ORION'S BLOG
It was Daddy's day off and we decided to take the boys down to the rides at Capital Lake Fair. It was very hot, sweaty, and slightly on the miserable side. This caused us to make our visit brief.

The sad thing was that, to get on most of the rides you had to be taller than a certain height line. Oliver was too short and sadly watched his brother have all the fun on the rides. He was able to play a few games and even won a bouncy ball at the fishing game. But still, he was disappointed. So to cheer Ollie up, we bought him his first snow cone. It's usually the same days that I have absolutely NO energy. Go figure. This morning they were both up and ready to go. At 8:00AM, just after breakfast, they wanted to know if we could go to the park. I was groggy and still sipping on my first cup of morning tea. But I was also overwhelmed with the concept of trying to entertain them at home so I agreed.

It was a bit cold out at that hour so we put on jackets and long pants, even though lately it's been in the 80's. We arrived at Pioneer Park and they were ready for fun. But, much to their chagrin, they were going to be playing by themselves.

No other parents in their right minds would be at a park at that hour. So, I jumped in and chased them around. Ollie liked when he would hide in the tunnel and I'd pop in and scare him. Finally I grew tired and we loaded up to go home...just as car loads of kids started to arrive! Figures again!!! The boys were sad temporarily but then were happy to be bribed with "ooft lover" in the car (that's what Ollie calls fruit leather).

5/21/09 - HOT DAYS IN MAY

PREVIOUS
NEXT
RETURN TO ORION'S BLOG
We've hit some oddly hot days in May. It feels like the middle of August. It's been in the 80's. The boys are lovin' it and every day they want to get in the pool. Especially Ollie.

He's currently obsessed with water play. If he's not in the pool playing, he wants to be indoors "washing da dishes" or "wash hands in da sink". Both are code for making a huge water mess indoors but not actually accomplishing anything. I think Orion went through this phase at about age 3 so I guess it's expected.

And Ollie's newest thing is climbing to high heights. He climbs to the very top of the play toy but then he can't get down again and screams for help. At least he's aware of his limitations and doesn't just leap down and break bones. (Not yet!)

4/28/09 - ASLEEP AT THE CAKE

PREVIOUS
NEXT
RETURN TO ORION'S BLOG
This past weekend we had a family gathering at Benson Lake with Grandpa Gadget, Grandma Nancy, Aunt Kathy, Uncle Seong Yoon (Ollie calls him Uncle Onion) and us.

It was fun to hang with everyone and stay up late playing Pictionary. We had a mini birthday celebration for me and Kathy baked me a cake. We started out the day playing in the sandbox in the backyard. The boys got sand wedged everywhere so they quickly had a bath before lunch and the school bus arrival.

While waiting for the bus, they had "sidewalk wars" on their wheeled toys. Ollie in his retro-rocket and Orion on a big wheel/trike. They would back up from each other and then head full speed ahead until they crashed into one another. There was a bit of fighting and tears but most of the time they laughed it off. Now these road trips are usually the way we visit with Grandpa George. We explore the area looking for new growth, trees, and anything interesting to look at. This time we headed down the Natchez Trace.

The Natchez Trace was a traditional Native American trail and was later also used by early European explorers as both a trade and transit route in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Today, the trail has been commemorated by the 444-mile-long Natchez Trace Parkway, which follows the approximate path of the trace.

We stopped just outside of Iuka, Mississippi and walked along a natural spring/creek. The boys and Hannah loved digging through the leaves for the perfect stick. Orion pretended to be fishing in the creek with his stick. Ollie just liked throwing them and watching them float down stream. We continued to drive around and ended up passing through 3 states in our travels; Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi. Then we returned back to Lawrenceburg, TN. We then spent a few hours visiting with some more family friends and finally headed back to our little cabin way past bed time. Sleep is limited on this trip but family time is plentiful and worth the sacrifice.

3/3/09 - PULVERIZED COOKIE DUST

PREVIOUS
NEXT
RETURN TO ORION'S BLOG
They get me every year. They are lurking just outside of our most frequented places. Lowes, Safeway, the Post Office. They lure me in every time with their thin mints. Those darn girl scouts and their cookies!

Ollie witnessed me sneaking away in the darkness of the kitchen with a glass of milk and wondered what I was crunching on. Then he started yelling out "brown cookie, brown cookie, I want it!".

Now, most parents wait for a moment of reward to give out cookies and sweets. But around here it's hard to say "If you eat your veggies you can have a cookie". Because truthfully, our boys are so scrawny that we long to get calories in them any way we know how. Our own pediatrician suggested giving Ollie twinkies! You know it's desperate when the Dr. prescribes twinkies!

So, I stuck him in his high chair and let him chomp away of a few thin mints. The proof that our kids don't eat is that he mashed up the cookies with a fork until they were pulverized into a fine cookie dust and then smeared the crumbs on his face and around his tray. Ultimately, most of the calories did not make it into his mouth. A kid that won't eat cookies is truly a non-eater. How on earth did this happen to me? I managed to almost single-handedly polish off the entire box of thin mints in under 2 days! This calorie problem must come from the other side of the gene pool.

2/10/09 - FEBRUARY SNOW

PREVIOUS
NEXT
RETURN TO ORION'S BLOG
Well, it's been about a month, but the snow returned today. Both boys seemed happy about it and wanted to play. But, it was very wet snow and the prediction was that it would melt soon. The prediction was also that it would only last a few hours. That didn't turn out to be true. It snowed big puffy flakes late into the afternoon. But it was true that it was very wet snow.

They didn't cancel school so we suited up early for the bus so as to have some snow play time before it arrived. Ollie made a new discovery...the feel of melting snowflakes in his hand. Last time it snowed he spent very limited time out in it because he was so sick from some unknown illness. And he had never been out in it without gloves. This time I took his gloves off because they were bugging him. He just sat there with his hands in the air catching snowflakes. He was mesmerized by the experience.

We tossed a few snowballs and talked about how much we missed the igloos we had made a month ago in our front yard. Snow days always take me back to my childhood. There was nothing that could beat a snowy day, a good hill, and the hope of hot cocoa to warm up to later. I take great pleasure now in watching my kids experience those same joys in life.

2/8/09 - THE UNBREAKABLE BROTHER BOND

PREVIOUS
NEXT
RETURN TO ORION'S BLOG
As Ollie starts to get older and more communicative he is starting to bond more and more with Orion. Granted, most times when they are together they are fighting over sharing toys. But occasionally I catch them belly laughing together in their Thomas the tank engine tent or play wrestling on the floor and laughing. It's precious and makes me hope for so many things that they might share in the future. I imagine the brother bond must be unlike any other. Unbreakable. I'm happy that they have each other...as different as their personalities may be.

Today they jumped onto the same chair and started being so sweet. They both wanted me to take a video of them so I did, even though nothing really eventful happened in the video. Here is a clip of that.

Anyway, this afternoon we took both boys to the children's museum. Orion was meeting a classmate named Otto. Orion doesn't often meet up with other kids to play so it was a nice treat for him.

Ollie loved being at the museum too and really enjoyed dumping lentils from cup to cup in the toddler room. He either rides the toy pony or the retro rocket. His preference is the retro rocket because it has storage under the seat and he can fill it with all of his goodies. Whenever we lose something important like our car keys we first look in the retro rocket. Many missing things end up in there.

Today I opened up the retro rocket seat and in it was a nice collection of things; a hair brush, 2 band aids, some chewed up raisins, an envelope from an old credit card bill, two of Orion's socks, and a handful of missing pegs from the battleship game. Ollie's treasures. He just scoots around the house and picks up things under chairs and on tables and hides them in his rocket. What a little scavenger!

1/13/09 - FACING DOWN OUR GIANT - THE MMR VACCINE!

PREVIOUS
NEXT
RETURN TO ORION'S BLOG
The day we feared arrived. Today was Ollie's 2 year check-up (it should have been last month but we had to reschedule due to snow). We decided to take a leap of faith and give Ollie the MMR vaccine. For those that don't know, the MMR vaccine is at the height of controversy within the autism community. It's the vaccine that many families link to the cause of their child's autism. MMR stands for Measles, Mumps, Rubella. Back in the 70's they gave it as 3 separate shots. But somewhere along the line they decided to combine them into one shot and that's right around the time when documented cases of autism went up. The medical community says there is no link between vaccines and autism. A large part of the autism community disputes that.

So, since Orion is considered to be on the autism spectrum, and I'd say he just barely meets the criteria, we had concerns. Would this shot be a turning point in Ollie's life? Would our sweet little commucative and socially interactive guy suddenly withdraw and lose language? We had no idea. Truth be told, we tended to lean towards the medical community's viewpoint. But still, it was a scary thing to do. To think that by one decision we could be altering his life forever. But, to not vaccinate him had risks too. So, we faced down our giant, took a leap of faith, and gave him the vaccine.

The outcome? He seems to be totally unaffected by it. He is still the same little Ollie we remember. Praise God!!!

While I took Ollie to the Dr's, Orion stayed with Grandma back at our house. He always enjoys his time with her even if it's brief. And this time when Grandma had to leave even little Ollie cried and had sadness about it. That was a first. He's finally connecting to people other than us. A new milestone.

The only sad aspect of today's events was that our Pediatrician, Dr. Mason - whom we adore, told us he is retiring in September. We credit him for being so keenly aware of Orion's sensitivities and leading us to some incredibly good therapists and help. He changed the course of our son's life and we are forever grateful to him for that. It will be sad to see him go.

12/25/08 - I'M DREAMING OF A WHITE CHRISTMAS!

PREVIOUS
NEXT
RETURN TO ORION'S BLOG
It happened! There is actually and truly snow on the ground on Christmas day. A white Christmas!!! Of course, it's left over snow from earlier in the week and it's slowly melting away. The igloos in our front yard are hangin' on but most other things, including the 2 snow men we made have melted. Still, it's neat to look out and see snow on Christmas day. That hasn't happened in these parts for 18 years!

The good news is that it wasn't so snowy that family couldn't make it out to our house. Grandpa Jim, Grandma, and Aunt Kathy ventured out and arrived this morning to celebrate with us. We had a fake fire crackling on the HDTV and a holiday ham ready to eat.

Before family arrived we brought the boys down stairs and they started in on some gifts and stockings. Ollie ran to the biggest gift in the room and just started tearing at the wrapping paper. Good thing it was a gift for him!

It was a nice, laid back Christmas and the good news is that there's lots of holiday ham leftovers. Yum! Happy Birthday Jesus!!! We love you.
(note - there are no pics of the family visit 'cause it was chaos as usual. Oh well. I think we have video of it somewhere)

12/19/08 - HIVES, HIVES, EVERYWHERE!!!

PREVIOUS
NEXT
RETURN TO ORION'S BLOG
Poor little Ollie has been very ill since Thanksgiving. He came down with double ear infections, double pink eye, a fever, and a bad cold.

So the Dr. put him on antibiotics. But, after 2 weeks he still wasn't better. So they put him on stronger antibiotics. A week later, and a day after his birthday, he woke up with hives all over him. It was so scary looking. We thought he had the measles or fifth's disease. But, we rushed him to the Dr. and they just told us it was hives. It's possible that it's a reaction to the antibiotics. But, it's also possible that it's totally non-related. They just couldn't tell us.

The poor boy was miserable and itchy. And his fever came back in a big way. How did this happen? It seems like yesterday he was just a newborn baby. Time flies.

Oliver loves rocket ships so John made him a rocket ship cake. It was a nice surprise for him. But the biggest birthday surprise was the many more inches of snow we got. Oliver went out in it briefly with Daddy in the morning but then spent the rest of the day playing inside.

Due to the snow, we had no guests at his party except us. But he's too young to know that he missed out on having folks there.

He loved the piggy bank he got and the new stool with his name on it. Thanks Mary Ann and David for the stool! We are told to expect more packages soon after the snow lets up. It will be an extended birthday for Ollie!

12/17/08 - SNOW ADVENTURES

PREVIOUS
NEXT
RETURN TO ORION'S BLOG
Today there was snow and lots of it. Ollie is more reluctant in the snow than his bigger brother these days and is particularly hesitant around the scary snowman in the front yard.

But, he agreed to suit up and play in the backyard. He looked like the "I can't put my arms down" kid in "A Christmas Story" and actually toppled over a few times and was unable to get up without assistance. But, he still enjoyed trying to put snow in a bucket and kick a big beach ball around the back yard. Today is his last day of being a 1 year old! My little boy is growing up!!!

11/20/08 - IF I CAN MAKE IT THROUGH 2!

PREVIOUS
NEXT
RETURN TO ORION'S BLOG
I've heard concerns from friends and family about why there are no blog entries lately. My explanation? These boys are keeping me so exhausted and busy that I hardly have time to eat, sleep, and use the bathroom. And many days I think I am one small tweak away from the funny farm.

You know, it's odd to me that when people first have a newborn everyone flocks to their aid with home cooked meals and helping hands. But honestly, life with a newborn is really quite easy in my opinion. They just sleep, eat, and poop. There are no temper tantrums. There is no tattling. They aren't mobile and trying to stand on the highest piece of furniture to take a swan dive. They aren't sticking raisins in the DVD player or feeding the dog an entire box of crayons. They aren't hitting their brother. They aren't trying to test the waters to see who's in charge. Nope. A newborn is easy.

The real time when people should flock to your aid is when you have a 2 year old. They don't call them the terrible twos for nothing. So, instead of "Awe...you have a newborn in the house. Are you okay? Are you getting any rest?" they should say "Oh my...you have a 2 year old. Are you losing your mind? Are you wiped out from dragging your kid in and out of time-out? Is your brain melting from the constant tantruming because they refuse to share their toys?" Yes, this is the time when help and prayer is needed. Truly, if I can just make it through until Ollie is 3 there might be hope for me. Right now, I'm just proud that I kept everyone alive for another day.

Anyway, here is a picture of Oliver (the "almost 2" year old tyrant) who dragged me out into the rain and cold to kick a ball around but then just ended up trying to pluck all of Daddy's plants and things and then escape down the sidewalk. Ah...the joys of motherhood.

10/27/08 - PERFECT BLUE SKIES AT PIONEER PARK

PREVIOUS
NEXT
RETURN TO ORION'S BLOG
Hallelujah...there is still sun in the sky!!! It was cold and damp but I bundled up the boys and we headed out to Pioneer park to play. We actually were the only kids there at 10:00 AM. I guess other people didn't want to let there kids get wet and icky in the cold air. But sunshine will soon be disappearing for many months so we had to take advantage of it.

The leaves on the trees were just beautiful. Baxter sits at my feet while I hold the frisbee. Then I say "Ready, Set..." and Ollie hollers "Go!"(although it sounds like "Doe") and the frisbee is tossed and Baxter takes off. Then Ollie giggles while Baxter runs around the yard and then he waits for his turn to shout out the final command again.

Ollie also loves the sandbox but we have had so much rain recently that it was all wet and icky. It didn't stop him though. He dug around and had sand stuck to him everywhere. Then shortly after, the school bus arrived with Orion so we brushed everyone off and headed back indoors.

10/8/08 - EARLY TERRIBLE TWOS?

PREVIOUS
NEXT
RETURN TO ORION'S BLOG
It used to be that Oliver was our easy one. And maybe that's because Orion was and has always been a bit complex. But recently it seems like roles have changed.

Orion seems much more manageable, predictable, and tolerant of things he once did not tolerate. He's definitely made some leaps and bounds in the past year.

And Ollie, a typical child, is now reaching his "terrible twos". He's trying to exert more independence but he doesn't have the physical and verbal skills to do all that he comes up with in his head. So, he gets frustrated. That I don't mind as much.

What I do have a struggle dealing with is the tantrums when the answer is "no" to something he wants. Recently the battle has been Playdo. We finally let him play with it hoping that he was past the stage of eating it. He does fine for a while and then he suddenly tries to eat a chunk. We find him with red or green stuff oozing out of his mouth. The evidence. We tell him no. We tell him not to eat it. He understands...we are certain. But he waits until we aren't looking and does it again. So we take it away and this is when the tantrum happens. And he can throw a big, long, drawn out tantrum. So, we've been doing lots of time outs. But time out doesn't work well in public and his tantrums often continue there for other reasons.

I wake up these days dreading the endless tantrums we will all endure from Oliver. Yes, that's right...our sweet little Oliver is passing through a not-so-sweet stage. I tell myself, "this too shall pass".

Here are pictures from today of him playing outside. He refused a nap and was intolerable inside so since the sun was shining we went outside to pass the time. Lord help me when the sun stops shining for the long, dark winter we always have in the Northwest.

9/23/08 - BINKY FREE AND NT

PREVIOUS
NEXT
RETURN TO ORION'S BLOG
Well, there are two good things to announce recently about Oliver. First, he finally broke the binky (pacifier) habit. It was a tough few days when it came to napping and sleeping but he eventually got used to soothing himself back to sleep by just sucking on his blanket. Now he talks a lot more without that plug in his mouth constantly. But, the downside is that he puts everything that he shouldn't in his mouth so you have to watch him constantly.

The other announcement is that the school district evaluated Ollie and it turns out he is NT. For those of you who don't know what that means, it's a term used in the autism community that stands for Neurotypical. That means he is developing normally.

Two ladies came by and evaluated him. It was the exact same testing they did on Orion about 3 years ago so it was a strange deja vu for me. But it was also evident how completely different my two boys are. Ollie was very engaged with the ladies and talked a lot. He transitioned from one activity to the next with no problems. But when it came to doing shape puzzles he was truly puzzled. I can remember that Orion whized through the shape puzzles with flying colors at age 2. Orion also counted items much better and recognized more words and letters in books.

I was concerned before they told me the results. But apparently, Ollie is exactly where he should be developmentally. I guess kids on the autism spectrum tend to be super smart with the visual piece and numbers and letters. That explains Orion's results. But they tend to struggle with transitioning, verbal, and social. Those were Ollie's strong points.

So, our kids are very different and it's a good thing. God is shaping us through raising these amazingly wonderful boys.

9/9/08 - PERSONALITY PROFILE

PREVIOUS
NEXT
RETURN TO ORION'S BLOG
I'm just posting because I took a picture of Oliver today that I really like. But here is a general update on my little cutie pie.

He's almost 21 months old now and he's got his own little personality. Mostly, he's just so sweet. He is curious. He is a climber and gets into things quickly. You have to be on high alert around him or he will get into trouble.

Here is a list of things he loves...

balls (totally obsessed)

balloons

berry picking and eating blueberries (he calls them "blue-eees")

airplanes (he says "bye, bye eh-pwane" and does the peanut butter, parade wave)

chocolate pudding ("pu-ing, pu-ing, PU-ING" over and over again)

independence (he wants to do everything himself and often can)

baths

slides (he calls "lide")

swings (he calls "wing")

his big brother Orion (he calls him "O-wine" and really looks up to him and enjoys playing with him)

threading things between his toes (loves this. when he falls and hurts himself we do this to sooth him)

blanky, lamby, and binky (trying to cut back on the binky though)

peek-a-boo

pop-up books

silky tags on anything (blankets, clothing, curtains)

Ollie is usually very well behaved unless he is sick, teething, or overtired. I must say that we absolutely love this kid. We love when he tips his head back and squints his eyes and grins from ear to ear and says "fu-eee" (that's his way of saying you're funny). He's just so adorable and amazing and we feel so blessed to have been chosen by God to be his parents.
